Alpha & Omega Working Dogs

about us

Alpha & Omega Working Dogs came into being ten years ago. It was a natural process, borne from our founder's love for dogs, as well as his incredible affinity with them.

Our Founder: Sergeant Ray Harris is an 8-year Veteran with the Delaware State Department of Corrections. His career in law enforcement regularly exposed him to working dogs, and he discovered a passion for breeding, training, and competing. He is a member of Shutzhund USA, the premier club for German Shepherd trainers, as well as The National Working Dog Association.

Competitions: Ray has been competing since 2005, and has won awards in K9 sports up and down the east coast. In 2015, he became a certified decoy for Schutzhund, allowing him to decoy for club trials across the USA. He has performed in that capacity in seven states and counting.

Police Dogs: As of 2017, Ray has also expanded into developing Police K-9 units with several local Law Enforcement entities. He became a member of the USPCA to help police working dogs certify and compete in K-9 trials regionally.

Other Work: Alpha & Omega Working Dogs also trains non-working dogs. See our Services section for more details on our obedience, behavior modification, boarding, and personal protection programs.

Keep Moving Forward: In the future, Ray intends to represent the United States in working dog competitions internationally, to further develop and refine his work with K-9, and to expand into other working dog areas. To that end, Alpha & Omega staff are all involved in ongoing education and training programs to better serve our furry friends and their humans.

Service Dogs: Alpha & Omega trains PTSD service dogs for veterans, first responders, and anyone who has undergone trauma. See our Services section for more detail.

Our Services

Our facilities are trained to handle dogs of all sizes and temperaments for short to medium-length boarding stays. We don't keep dogs in crates all day - they'll go to bed happy and worn out from an appropriate amount of exercise. We are also equipped to accommodate special dietary needs and to administer medications as needed. For details, head over to our Contact page and tell us more about your dog.

Board and train

Our board and train program is an immersive experience for your dog, in which he will be boarded with his trainer and taught basic obedience. Specific training programs will be worked out to suit your needs.

Basic Obedience Training

In Basic Obedience Training, we give your puppy or grown dog a foundation for good behavior. This includes on-leash control, socialization, changing behaviors throughout maturation, and teaching the dog to focus on their handler. This program also includes an introduction to basic commands such as Sit, Heel, Stay, Down, and Come.

Advanced Obedience Training

In Advanced Obedience Training, you and your dog will learn off-leash trust, situational handler control, and an advanced or more thorough focus on the commands learned in Basic Obedience Training, as well as an introduction to the finished Heel position.

Personal Protection

We don't set out to make "Guard Dogs," in the stereotypical sense. A great protection dog is neither overly aggressive nor bite-prone. A Protection Dog must excel in temperament, tolerance, and obedience. Bite modification training will teach your dog proper restraint and control of any territorial aggression. Remember, a great protection dog is a calm, intelligent animal, not an angry or violent one.

IPO/Shutzhund Training

IPO stands for Internationale Prufungs-Ordnung, and is a sport, formerly (and still commonly) referred to as Schutzhund, german for "Protection Dog." It is a three-part sport, covering Tracking, Obedience, and Protection Phases. We'll develop your dog's core instincts toward drive, nerves, and obedience. When contacting us, it is important to keep in mind that not every dog is well suited to IPO training, for instance dogs with poor nerves or stress responses. However, we will work with you to determine your dog's suitability, and if approved, ensure that they pass all three phases of IPO training.

Behavior Modification

Behavior Modification address undesirable negative behaviors in your dog. We use a custom system based on positive reinforcement to change those behaviors. Our therapeutic approach never harms or frightens your dog, and instead uses a reward-based process to encourage behavioral changes.

PTSD/ Service Training

PTSD and Service . training prepares a dog to assist a person who has undergone trauma. Whether the source of one’s Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is due to service in the Armed Forces, a personal trauma, a natural disaster, or something else, Alpha & Omega works to create and foster an unbreakable bond of compassion and reliance between the service dog and the person for whom they will be trained.

Ask us about Alpha & Omega’s group classes. They are a wonderful opportunity to introduce your dogs to other canines currently training with us. No experience is required to participate. Reach out to us for further details.

Here are a few words from actual Alpha & Omega customers and graduates:

Ray is outstanding. Very good with reading a dog and working with a dog safely. High-key recommend him for any training you’re needing.
— Craig Johnson
“I don’t let just anyone take care of my fur babies!! Had a relaxing week away knowing Alpha & Omega was taking care of our 5 month old Goldendoodle! Plus side: he came home walking great on his leash and sitting on command. Can’t wait to see what his future training brings. Thank you for treating my dog like your own!”
— Megan Herrmann
Great establishment with a great trainer. Ray knows dogs and knows the best way to aproach the needs of the clients and dogs he is working with. Not only does he know how to train the dog, but he knows how to train the owner.
— Nico Cayetano
I have had my dog Nina since February. She is a 3yr old pitbull/bulldog mix. Sweet girl, but she definitely has her moments with aggression, especially toward other dogs. The best decision I have made was working with Ray and Karli. They are passionate about training your dog and educating the owner. After my first session with Ray, I [saw] huge improvements with Nina. Pitbulls get a bad wrap saying they are aggressive and cant be trained ... well I have witnessed firsthand that they can.
— Kimberly Marie
A big thank you to Ray and Karli and their team for putting together an individualized plan for my 12 year old golden retriever, Chase. They came out twice a day to work with Chase going up and down steps of our new condo. Within 4 days Chase was going up and down the steps and as my new neighbor said to me today he looks like he is smiling! This was all done with positive reinforcement and also the love for the dogs they work with. Thanks so much!
— Melinda Brooks
Ray and I have worked long and hard preparing Hugo for the first of many Schutzhund titles! [...] I couldn’t imagine training anywhere else ... and I couldn’t have gotten here without Ray.
— Lauren Kennish
This kind of work take real dedication and caring for the animals and the people who rely on them. You show this in all you do.
— Joan Romano
Ray is one of the best! He’s a very dedicated and humble man and the passion for his work speaks for itself. Highly recommend him!
— Stephen Sundquist
I have known many dog trainers over the past 40+ years, but Ray is the finest I have ever met. He is so patient with this old handler [...] my Doberman, Ava, loves seeing him ... I would highly recommend Alpha & Omega to anyone that wants to improve their relationship with their dog.”
— Amy Levine-Brittin
Ray is a talented & passionate professional. His years of experience are reflected in his dedication to his craft. He applies proven training techniques in a customized approach geared to the individual needs of his clients. He trained our beloved Nas, an 80 pound pit bull, to be gentle, obedient, and respectful to people of all ages, other dogs, and cats. Whether you are looking for basic obedience training or someone to address a more difficult dog, you will be very pleased with the way Ray will train both you and your dog!
— Michael and Debi Kenney
Best training program I have ever witnessed. They got our dog’s behavior changed in a week! You can tell they truly care about helping people establish a healthy relationship with their dog. I highly recommend them for any training needs you may have!
— Krissy Finore
