about us

Alpha & Omega Working Dogs came into being ten years ago. It was a natural process, borne from our founder's love for dogs, as well as his incredible affinity with them.

Call (856) 441-2425 today for a complimentary consultation about your pup!

Overview

Our Founder: Sergeant Ray Harris is an 8-year Veteran with the Delaware State Department of Corrections. His career in law enforcement regularly exposed him to working dogs, and he discovered a passion for breeding, training, and competing. He is a member of Shutzhund USA, the premier club for German Shepherd trainers, as well as The National Working Dog Association.

Competitions: Ray has been competing since 2005, and has won awards in K9 sports up and down the east coast. In 2015, he became a certified decoy for Schutzhund, allowing him to decoy for club trials across the USA. He has performed in that capacity in seven states and counting.

Police Dogs: As of 2017, Ray has also expanded into developing Police K-9 units with several local Law Enforcement entities. He became a member of the USPCA to help police working dogs certify and compete in K-9 trials regionally.

Other Work: Alpha & Omega Working Dogs also trains non-working dogs. See our Services section for more details on our obedience, behavior modification, boarding, service and therapy training programs.

Keep Moving Forward: In the future, Ray intends to represent the United States in working dog competitions internationally, to further develop and refine his work with K-9, and to expand into other working dog areas. To that end, Alpha & Omega staff are all involved in ongoing education and training programs to better serve our furry friends and their humans.

Service Dogs: Alpha & Omega trains PTS/PTSD service dogs for veterans, first responders, and anyone who has undergone trauma. See our Services section for more detail.

Our Services

Boarding

Our facilities are trained to handle dogs of all sizes and temperaments for short to medium-length boarding stays. We don't keep dogs in crates all day - they'll go to bed happy and worn out from an appropriate amount of exercise. We are also equipped to accommodate special dietary needs and to administer medications as needed. For details, head over to our Contact page and tell us more about your dog.

Board and train

Our board and train program is an immersive experience for your dog, in which he will be boarded with his trainer and taught basic obedience. Specific training programs will be worked out to suit your needs.

Basic Obedience Training

In Basic Obedience Training, we give your puppy or grown dog a foundation for good behavior. This includes on-leash control, socialization, changing behaviors throughout maturation, and teaching the dog to focus on their handler. This program also includes an introduction to basic commands such as Sit, Heel, Down, and Come.

Advanced Obedience Training

In Advanced Obedience Training, you and your dog will learn off-leash trust, situational handler control, and an advanced or more thorough focus on the commands learned in Basic Obedience Training, as well as an introduction to the finished Heel position.

Doggone FUN DAY CAMP™

Day camps for dogs need to be a lot of things, but the most important is fun! Our Doggone Fun Day Camp is mentally stimulating and physically active. It’s a great way to improve your pup’s socialization with dogs and people, as well as get some regular exercise. As a bonus, it also helps dogs with separation anxiety and reduces destructive behaviors at home that stem from anxiety or restlessness. Dogs play (and rest) in small groups organized by size and play style, and we always send happy furry boys and girls back home to their families.

Behavior Modification

Behavior Modification address undesirable negative behaviors in your dog. We use a custom system based on positive reinforcement to change those behaviors. Our therapeutic approach never harms or frightens your dog, and instead uses a reward-based process to encourage behavioral changes.

PTS/PTSD and THERAPY DOG Training

PTS/PTSD and Service training prepares a dog to assist a person who has undergone trauma. Whether the source of one’s Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is due to service in the Armed Forces, a personal trauma, a natural disaster, or something else, Alpha & Omega works to create and foster an unbreakable bond of compassion and reliance between the service dog and the person for whom they will be trained. These classes can also prepare a dog for Therapy or Emotional Support roles in your life.

TESTIMONIALS

Here are a few words from actual Alpha & Omega customers and graduates:

We’ve trained multiple dogs over 45 years, but the trainers at Alpha & Omega are outstanding. They are gentle, firm, clear, great teachers, and they make dog training fun. Our dog, Fiona, started three weeks ago, loves to work, and is making great progress. They have our highest recommendation.
— Harriet Beckerman
Wow! I’m not one to write a review, but I just had to about Alpha & Omega Working Dogs! I got a puppy right before Christmas. He is my first dog and way more work then I could of imagined. I got in contact with Karli, who was so awesome and informative! I started taking Kane to puppy classes and at first he wouldn’t even walk on a leash. After a few short weeks he is doing so awesome! He loves to go to class, EVERYONE who works there is so nice and understanding. They really help you, esp. being a new dog mom. I felt kind of lost before going to class but after going and talking to all the dog parents of all different kinds of dogs, I felt so much better and confident. Kane sleeps so good after class! The facility is so nice and clean! I HIGHLY recommend taking your dogs to Alpha & Omega! You will not be disappointed!
— Ashley Keich
I cannot say enough about Ray, Karli and the entire staff. They have adopted us as well as our dog Cosmo. We rescued a 9 yr old dog who unbeknownst to us had behavioral issues. We did not know where to turn or what to do and we were exhausted. They are the best support system we could have asked for. They are not only knowledgable but sweet, kind and patient. I HIGHLY recommend. After only a few weeks he is doing SO much better. They even found us a groomer who wasn’t afraid of his nipping. We have a way to go but I have full confidence that they will be by our side the entire time helping us AND Cosmo have the best life possible.
— Roberta Scott
Alpha & Omega is the best! Ray and his team did an amazing job teaching me how to train my two German Shepherds. My two unruly pups have come a long way since Ray first visited my house. I now have the control and confidence to enjoy my dogs whether we are at home with guests or out walking or at a park. Ray’s expertise and patience is the perfect combination to ensure success.
— Amy Drennen
A big thank you to Ray and Karli and their team for putting together an individualized plan for my 12 year old golden retriever, Chase. They came out twice a day to work with Chase going up and down steps of our new condo. Within 4 days Chase was going up and down the steps and as my new neighbor said to me today he looks like he is smiling! This was all done with positive reinforcement and also the love for the dogs they work with. Thanks so much!
— Melinda Brooks
We highly recommend Alpha & Omega! We have had our puppy working with them since she was 4 months old (she’s now 8 months old) and the lessons have made her a joy to take anywhere! She plays great with other dogs and knows her basic commands. If you are looking for a loving and effective training program for your dog, I highly recommend A&O!
— Julie Mastronardi
This kind of work takes real dedication and caring for the animals and the people who rely on them. You show this in all you do.
— Joan Romano
Alpha & Omega Working Dogs helped me when I thought all hope had been lost. I got my first puppy in May of 2020 and had no experience with training. As you can imagine, this led to an unruly pup who wanted everything to go his way. By January 2021 I had enrolled my puppy, Charlie, into A & O’s “Not Just Basic Obedience” classes. After working hard with the amazing staff for over 6 months, we have learned so much— and Charlie has come such a long way. His behavior is much better, he walks well on a leash, and listens to commands. Thank you A & O for turning a stressful situation into lifelong happiness!
— Alex Hitchens
I’m not a big review writer because I rarely find a business that impresses me to the point that I feel compelled to invest the time to speak up. However, Alpha & Omega is different, you feel it the minute you walk in. Our experience throughout our ongoing time there has been fantastic. They ask your goals for your dog and create an individual plan to meet those goals. They are patient and supportive through the entire process, going above and beyond to help you and your dog become a successful team; they feel truly invested in your success. I get compliments all the time about how well behaved our dog is. I can’t tell you how happy and grateful I am that we are a part of the Alpha & Omega family. There are several trainers closer to my home that would certainly be more convenient for us to get to but I wouldn’t even consider going anywhere else. Ray, Karli and their team won’t disappoint!
— Denise Zadeh
Ray is a talented & passionate professional. His years of experience are reflected in his dedication to his craft. He applies proven training techniques in a customized approach geared to the individual needs of his clients. He trained our beloved Nas, an 80 pound pit bull, to be gentle, obedient, and respectful to people of all ages, other dogs, and cats. Whether you are looking for basic obedience training or someone to address a more difficult dog, you will be very pleased with the way Ray will train both you and your dog!
— Michael and Debi Kenney
My husband and I can not rave enough about A&O. They truly are our village! Bringing our Tank in as a 1 year old with little training, we were nervous, but looking back it’s the best thing we could have ever done! We’re now going on year 3 of attending, (they’ll never get rid of us) and it’s like our second home. We have had some hard times personally, when my health took a quick turn, A&O was there for “whatever you need” and helped keep our Tanky keep to a normal schedule. To recently, when we had our miracle baby, they helped us, and Tank to adjust to his new brother. Tank has been through all trainings, and is a frequent flier at day camp and we can honestly say it works! I think our favorite thing is the compliments we get from everyone about how well behaved Tank is. And we owe it all to our A&O Family!

Michael Lucchesi (“Mike”)

Explosives DETECTION

Our explosives detection program is rigorous and unmatched when it comes to developing single-purpose, single-handler teams dedicated to explosives detection. Often called “bomb-sniffing dogs,” our training starts in our New Jersey facility, where we train on a wide variety of explosive odors. We focus on eliminating all contamination and preparing our dogs to identify, quickly and reliably, any explosive odors. Our phases of training include:

  • Breeding/Selection: the best-in-class sporting dogs, renowned for their keen senses, drive, intelligence, stability, and stamina, are a required element in a successful partnership.

  • Socialization: Our trainee dogs are socialized to ensure they can function in multiple high-stress environments and around large groups without negative impacts on their ability to perform.

  • Imprinting: Alpha & Omega Full Service Scent Detection trainee dogs are then given thorough scent training, where they are taught to recognize over 30 different explosive odors and alert their handlers.

  • Operational Training: The final stage involves preparing the dog for the environments in which they might actually work, using critical training methods to make sure the dog is ready for deployment and field work.

NARCOTICS DETECTIOn

Narcotics searches are a crucial part of scent detection training, and is in high demand among working dog clients. Our dogs are carefully evaluated, and selected based on many factors. Once approved, they’re trained to detect narcotic substances in various locations, including residential properties, schools, workplace and office environments, open outdoor areas, and vehicles. Our certified K9s alert their handler to the presence of the substance and location through passive or aggressive alerts.

Narcotics Dogs are trained and certified to detect the following controlled substances:

  • Marijuana

  • Cocaine and Crack Cocaine

  • Methamphetamine

  • MDMA (Ecstasy)

  • Heroin

BED BUG DETECTION

Bed bugs are unpleasant, itchy, gross little pests, and they’re hard to detect without specialized equipment. At Alpha & Omega Full Service Scent Detection, we think the best equipment is a well-trained dog. In this training course, dogs are taught by handlers to identify the scent of these unwanted critters. This service is growing quickly in popularity as more and more Americans turn to eco-friendly pest management solutions.

Detection dogs are a much safer alternative to pesticides as a management strategy. Using the dogs senses, operators can determine with great precision where bed bugs are located, thus minimizing the area which will need to be sprayed. Dogs can smell in parts per trillion, which is far beyond the human capability, and thus can detect bed bugs through all phases of their life cycle, including nymphs.
